Violence in Chechnya continued, with 14 rebel attacks today. In addition, there were over a dozen army and police raids, plus the use of artillery and bombers to hit known, or suspected rebel camps. Over the past two centuries, the Russians have stopped this sort of violence by going after the families of the raiders. Hostages were taken, and killed, if the attacks did not stop. Russia is reluctant to do this sort of thing these days because of the bad publicity. But unofficially, Russian police and commandoes are doing that sort of thing, and it has cut down on a lot of the violence.
