Egypt issued a pledge that it would not "deploy a single soldier outside her borders." Western analysts say the statement, by President Hosni Mubarak, is directed at Sudan. Egypt is trying to broker a peace deal among the feuding factions in Khartoum and between the Muslim Sudanese North and the Christian/animist south.
