Reassessing Grant
Commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth U.S. Grant, this volume consists of essays on various aspects of his life, reputation, and memorialization.
There are papers on his character, early life, experience at West Point, religious background, and his marriage and family life. Several essays address his growth as a soldier and his way of war, the vagaries of his military reputation at the hands of the "Lost Cause" apologists and its recovery. We also get looks at his presidency, which was more successful than generally believed, and particularly his views on race and civil rights and his foreign policy, and more, including the observances on his passing and the story of his tomb.
This is important reading for anyone interested in Grant, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the vagaries of historical memory.
