The Air Force has issued a contract to Northrop Grumman for a system to protect large transport aircraft from heat-seeking missiles (regarded as a likely terrorist weapon). Under the two-stage program, the C-5 and C-17 fleets will be fitted with current-technology flare dispensers and infrared missile warning systems. Later, this equipment will be upgraded with more modern technology.--Stephen V Cole
