The Department of Defense is widely distributing the new Joint Service Light Weight Integrated Suit (JSLWIS) for protection against chemical weapons. The new JSLWIS looks and wears like the current camouflage uniform, except that it has a protective hood attached. The new suits can be washed six times before they lose their effectiveness. The suits use a two-layer fabric system with liquid-repellant nylon/cotton fabric and a carbon-sphere liner and provide protection for up to 45 days, versus 22 for the old suit. Like the old suit, the new one has to be removed within 24 hours of exposure to chemical weapons. Because of it's new composition, the new suit smells better than the old one. New gas masks will be in service by 2006 and new chemical protective boots by 2007.
