The US has warned Australia that a decade of low defense spending has seen the technological superiority that Australia once enjoyed in the Pacific evaporate, and that if Australia does not spend substantial sums modernizing its forces, they will no longer be capable of operating jointly with the US and other allies. Australia has agreed to allow the US to use Australian radar systems as part of the early warning network for the National Missile Defense System.--Stephen V Cole
