NEW COMMANDERS

@ Lieutenant General Sandro Ferracuti is the new Chief of Staff of the Italian Air Force.

@ Colonel Valdas Adamkus is to be the new commander of the Lithuanian Army.

@ Lieutenant General Edward Pietrzyk (commander of Polish land forces) and Lieutenant General Zygmunt Sadowski (the Polish general who commands NATO's Northeastern Corps) were promoted to full general on 15 August.

@ Admiral Mikhail Zakharenko to be Deputy Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy. Zakharenko authored the Russian Navy's current doctrine while commander of the Pacific Fleet.

@ Major General Branislav Petrovic was appointed as the new commander of the Yugoslav Air Force, replacing Lieutenant General Spasoje Smiljanic, who was politically connected to ousted President Milosevic. Army Chief of Staff General Nebojsa Pavkovic (also politically close to Milosevic) continues to resist efforts to force him to resign.--Stephen V Cole
