Algeria says the GSPC group that attacked the Mauritanian army base is operating in Mauritania. Moreover, al Qaeda claims, with some authority, that they ordered GSPC to attack military bases, and that was what brought about the June 4th attack. The attack was apparently meant to intimidate the Mauritanian army, and make it easier for Islamic radicals to operate in the area where the borders of Algeria, Mail and Mauritania meet.
