One of China's four ocean reconnaissance ships, the 17,000 ton Yuanwang 3, managed to get within 32 kilometers of the Taiwanese coast before being detected. This Chinese ship moved away as Taiwanese coast guard ships approached. Chinese recon ships have been increasingly more aggressive of late, which increases the chance of an armed confrontation at sea.
