Indonesia: December 18, 2000

A group of soldiers waiting to fly out of Aceh after a stressful tour of duty, decided to celebrate by firing their rifles into the air. An aircraft that was beginning its landing approach was hit by seven bullets, but none of the 47 passengers were injured and the pilot flew off to land at another airport. In Borneo, violence between local tribesmen and migrants from other parts of Indonesia flared up again. One tribesman and three migrants are dead. Some 3,000 died in such violence in Borneo in 1999.
