The government signed a deal with the GAM (Free Aceh Movement) to end the armed resistance to Indonesian rule. The deal would give Aceh more autonomy and the GAM would disarm.
Police say that those responsible for bombings in fast food restaurants and car dealerships in the past week are part of the Islamic radical group responsible for the Bali bombing. Often, such non-fatal bombings of businesses are part of criminal extortion operations.
