There are some 14,000 American military personnel involved in relief operations, some 90 percent of them sailors operating off the coast. But the U.S. Army has sent helicopters down from Korea, and the U.S. Air Force is operating over a dozen C-5, C-17 and C-130 transports out of bases in Thailand and Indonesia. There are several thousand troops from other countries, including warships and aircraft, in and around Aceh. But most of the air transports and helicopters are American.
