The government says that, since it began major military operations in Aceh last May, 3,378 separatist rebels have been killed, over 5,550 arrested, and 2,340 weapons seized. At the same time,  213 government soldiers have been killed and 514 wounded. The army believes the rebels now number about 1,500, armed with some 500 rifles and pistols. A year ago, it was believed that there were as many as 10,000 rebels, armed with 3,500 guns. The army believes that many rebels have simply quit, and some have left Aceh, or the country, to escape arrest. The rebels say that many of those killed or arrested are innocent civilians.
