For good behavior, the government reduced the sentence, for his role in the Bali bombings,  of Islamic radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, by four months and 15 days. This immediately produced protests by groups that have suffered from the terrorist attacks. But the government wants to play up to the Islamic conservatives, while at the same time reminding them that the government will crack down if anyone gets out of line.
