In the West Bank, a Palestinian suicide bomber blew up while sitting in a car when his explosives went off prematurely. The new head of Hamas, Abdel Aziz Rantissi, has backed off on declaring war on the United States, but has called president Bush an enemy of Islam and vowed to kill Israeli leaders. Security has increased for Israeli political and military leaders. Meanwhile, hundreds of known Hamas members and leaders have disappeared from public view, fearing they will be next in an ongoing Israeli program of killing Hamas leadership.
