The United States detailed North Koreas poppy cultivation, as well as its heroin and methamphetamine production. The North Koreans move the drugs by aircraft and ship to other nations in East Asia. North Korea denies it, despite being caught red handed several times. North Korean agents have also been detected trying to buy weapons technology, despite the wide spread starvation in North Korea. Economic reforms in the north have led to farmers markets (farmers can grow food on small plots for these markets) and other entrepreneurial operations. But this has just brought the black market out into the open and still left the majority of northerners with no jobs, worse off than ever.
