The army announced that last year fighting with the NPA left 189 rebels and 120 soldiers dead. There were 280 encounters the result of army action and 67 were NPA attacks or ambushes. Troops lost 146 weapons in combat, but army operations took 562 weapons from the NPA. At the beginning of the year, the army estimated that the NPA had 11,930 members and 7,156 weapons.
