The Russian armed forces, which total about a million troops, suffered 971 deaths last year (from all causes). Of that number, 263 died in Chechnya, versus 463 in 3002. There are currently 31,000 troops in Chechnya, plus another 40,000 police and paramilitary troops from the Interior Ministry.
