When Somalis found out that a Somali worker had been kidnapped in Iraq and was threatened, many vowed to seize and behead one of the Iraqis living in Somalia. There are several hundred Iraqis living in Somalia, all exiles who had fled Saddam Hussein's rule over the last two decades. The Iraqis generally work as shop keepers and merchants.
