Foreign aid groups operating inside Somalia estimate that a third of the children born die either at birth, or before their fifth birthday. This is the highest rate in the world. Moreover, the death rate from violence appears to be running at the rate of more than 100 per 100,000 population per year. This would put it much above the most dangerous places on earth (South Africa, with 55 a year, or central Iraq, at 45.)
