rebel leaders rushed in to restore peace.

For the first time since the ceasefire went into effect last February, troops and rebels got into a gun battle and two civilians died. The violence is caused by ethnic tensions between Tamils and non-Tamils. 

In the northeast, rebels freed six soldiers they had held captive for two weeks.
