Thailand: Do Not Mess With The Methamphetamines

September 23, 2011: Using security videos, police have identified two suspects in last week's triple bombing down south. There have been ten shootings in the last week down there, mostly against Moslems who opposed the Islamic terrorists. Police say they are discovering more connections between the drug gangs and the Islamic terror groups. This is an uneasy coalition, because Islamic radicals oppose the use of drugs, especially the methamphetamines the gangs are bringing in from Malaysia. But the gangs donate cash to the Islamic radicals, with the understanding that this will result in more violence, which distracts police from their anti-drug operations. But in the last year, some police have been assigned to dedicated anti-drug operations, and are never diverted to counter-terror activities. This has led to more drug shipments getting seized and drug gangsters arrested. The police now believe that the drug gangs are planting bombs themselves.

The army has noted the large growth in Islamic web sites among Thai Moslems. There are only 1.3 million Moslems in Thailand, but access to the Internet is widespread, and Islamic radical websites are numerous and have attracted many Thai Moslems. Army intelligence has obtained a lot of information about who is active in Islamic radical activities via monitoring these Islamic radical web sites.

September 16, 2011: In the south, three bombs went off in a southern tourist town, killing three Malaysians and a Thai, while also wounding fifty. A fourth bomb was found and disabled. It's unclear if these bombs were planted by Islamic terrorists, or drug gangs seeking revenge for recent operations against drug smuggling.

September 15, 2011: The government has agreed, with Cambodia, to withdraw all troops from the disputed temple grounds areas along the border. The UN had ordered such a withdrawal in July, but the government refused to comply.

In the south, a roadside bomb and gunfire killed five security personnel.

September 9, 2011: In the south, an army ranger was shot dead during an ambush. Other rangers returned fire and the Islamic radicals fled.
