charges in Canada. --Stephen V Cole

Moktar Hawari was denied bail by a Canadian judge on 20 Jan after the judge ruled that "serious and credible" evidence linked Hawari to a terrorist organization. He had been arrested in Canada on 10 January. Hawari and Abdel Ghani Meskini (arrested in New York on 30 December) were charged in the US with supplying explosives to arrested terrorist suspect Ahmed Ressam. Royal Canadian Mounted Police said that Hawari was a member of the Canadian cell of the Algerian GIA. While details are unclear, it appears that Hawari (also spelled Haouari) provided certain items (including false passports) to Ressam, and that Meskini carried them from Montreal to Vancouver to deliver them to Ressam. Hawari and Meskini have also been accused of various credit card and bank fraud crimes inside Canada linked to obtaining items for the alleged operation. --Stephen V
