Mauritanian police have freed Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who had been accused by the US of masterminding the foiled New Year's Eve triple bombing. Slahi, identified by the US through telephone intercepts as the mastermind behind the plot, is linked by marriage to Osama bin Laden. Senegal had originally arrested Slahi at the request of the US, but instead of handing him over to the FBI the Senegalese deported him to his home country of Mauritania. Local police detained him for a month but ultimately declared that the US had failed to provide enough
