Terrorism: April 20, 2003

Turkey reported a suicide bomb attack in Silopi yesterday. Turkish security personnel arrested a second would-be suicide bomber. There were no reports of casualties. A subsequent report said both of the suicide bombers were Syrians.

This is highly unusual, as the Turks have long made it clear to the Syrians that the Turkish army would move south into Syria if the Syrians supported any kind of terrorist activity in Turkey. This is the traditional relationship between the Syrians and Turks and no Syrian has ever advocated trying to take on the Turks militarily. Recent talk of Syria possessing chemical weapons has as much to do with the "Turkish threat" as the "Israeli threat." It's going to be quite interesting when the source of these Syrian suicide bombers is uncovered.
