Kazakhstan has begun calling up reservists for three-year tours in order to increase the strength of its Army in the face of Islamic guerrillas. Those called up are mostly technical specialists such as radio operators and military engineers, allowing more of the annual conscript pool to be trained for infantry tasks, which takes less time than training them for technical positions.--Stephen V Cole
