Chinese Communist Party newspapers, which previously spoke of President Jiang Zemin in respectful but cautious tones, have now begun comparing him favorably to Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. This is regarded as a signal that Jiang has been in office long enough to gain control over most of the party machinery.--Stephen V Cole
