India has signed a $170 million contract to buy 40 Mi-17 Hip-H multipurpose transport helicopters from Russia. India bought 100 Mi-17s in 1984, but has lost a third of them to various causes since then. These older Mi-17s have a less powerful engine than the new batch.--Stephen V Cole
