.The violence apparently began in Khoramabad when two pro-reform speakers flew in and were blocked at the airport by conservatives. This mobilized the many pro-reformers in the city and days of street battles followed. Meanwhile, Afghan drug smugglers in the east have tried something new, kidnapping local villagers (eight of them) and demanding ransom ($25,000 in this case.).
