Iran: February 13, 2001


  Violence continues on the 940 kilometer long Afghan border. Drugs from Afghanistan and Pakistan continue to come through, often with heavily armed escorts willing to shoot it out with Iranian troops. In the last nine months, 174 policemen and soldiers have died, as have 740 drug smugglers. Another 210 people have been wounded and 380 arrested.
