On the Afghan border, the last week has seen two Afghan drug smugglers killed and 174 arrested. Throughout the nation, 579 addicts were rounded up. There are now several million drug addicts in the country. The crack down on poppy (the source of heroin) cultivation in Afghanistan has caused a drug shortage in Iran. As a result, more addicts are trying to kick the habit and the government is using the opportunity to offer treatment to aid addicts who seek help.
