The Islamic conservatives continue to persecute moderates. The conservatives are torn over the prospect of American invading Iraq and removing Iraq. The conservatives fear the establishment of a democracy in Iraq, which would encourage reformers in Iran. Most Iranians hate Saddam because of Iraq's 1980 invasion of Iran.
