Iran: June 12, 2003

For a second night in a row, thousands of protesters flooded the streets of the capital. Police and militia, controlled by the religious conservative minority, were also out to beat and arrest the pro-reform protesters.

The US has provided support for the reformers in terms of radio and satellite TV broadcasts and, it is rumored, cash support via a network of Iranian-Americans and Iranian exiles. A Iranian commercial satellite TV channel based in the United States has provided pro-reform news. The religious conservatives in Iran have suppressed most media that does not agree with them.
