Some 700 people have been arrested for helping Iranians sneak across the Iraqi border to go on pilgrimage to the Shia holy sites. Police also seized 55 guns and ten hand grenades. It is estimated that up to 5,000 illegal pilgrims cross the border each day. Some of the pilgrims are apparently Islamic radicals, going to Iraq to fight the occupation forces.
