Terrorism: June 22, 2001

nor can they get it from Congress.--Stephen V Cole

With the five year statute of limitations on some conspiracy charges about to run out, the US indicted fourteen men for the 1996 bombing of Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia that killed 19 American air force personnel. The accused include thirteen Saudi's and one Lebanese, all members of the Iranian backed Hizbollah terrorist organization. The accused received training at Hizbollah camps in Lebanon and Iran. No Iranian officials were indicted, which was probably done at the request of Saudi officials. Saudi Arabia is trying to build good relations with Iran, as a defense against future aggression from Iraq. Some of the accused are in custody in Saudi Arabia and other countries. All are Shias (the majority sect of Islam in northeast Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran and portions of Lebanon.)
