The Czech Army has decided to proceed with upgrading 140 T-72 tanks to the new T-72M4CZ refit status. The upgrade program, which uses systems from several different Western suppliers, has been troubled with repeated failures, but in recent tests, upgraded tanks performed well and the program was approved. Due to costs, the original plans for 356 tanks had to be scaled back. The upgrade includes a new Perkins CV-12 diesel engine, an Allison XTG-411-6 transmission, a laser warning receiver, explosive reactive armor, stabilized day and thermal sights, and new radios among other equipment.--Stephen V Cole
