In a bid to capture part of the upgrade market and stay competitive in the export market, Russia's Uralvagnozavod tank factor is offering a new upgrade package for the T-72M1 (which is the export version of the T-72A used by the Russian Army). The upgrade offers an 840hp or 1000hp diesel engine to replace the original 780hp diesel. The original 125mm 2A46 cannon is replaced by the 2A46M, which (along with improved fire controls) allows the tank to use the 9M119 laser-guided cannon-launched missile. Included in the upgrade is a French thermal-image sighting system by Thales. New sights improve the daytime target identification range from 2000 meters to 4000 meters and the nighttime identification range from 300 meters to 1200 meters. The Stora active jamming system is available if the customer requires protection from wire-guided anti-tank missiles. So few countries have indicated an interest in upgrading T-72s that most Western companies have abandoned pursuit of this market. --Stephen V Cole
