Afghanistan: September 8, 1999


Fighting in northern Afghanistan (Balkh and Samangan provinces) over four days has left the Taliban defeated. Some 200  Taliban troops were captured, and another 300 defected to the Northern Alliance. Meanwhile, over 200,000 refugees have fled the fighting. Some 140,000 have moved to Northern Alliance territory, the rest, for the most part, towards Kabul.
