Taliban troops have pushed through the the Northern Alliance counteroffensive and closed in on the mountains surrounding the key northern town of Taloqan (capital of Takhar province, on the Tajikistan border.) Taliban and Northern Alliance troops are fighting for control of the high ground, and thus the ability to cut off movement into Taloqan.
