The Taliban attempted to advance along a road 270 kilometers northwest of the capital. After seven hours of fighting, the Taliban retreated, losing about 30 dead and 20 prisoners to the Northern Alliance forces. Taliban bombers have also been hitting Northern Alliance held towns near the Tajik border. These towns are used as transit points for supplies coming in from Tajikistan (and said to be paid for by Russia.)
