The government has announced that it will dismiss many men from the national police (Gendarmerie) who have been found to be corrupt or inclined to violence against civilians. Many Algerians have long called for such a purge. What forced the government's hand was the recent riots and demonstrations by Berbers, who have gotten the worst treatment from the largely non-Berber police.
