Armor: April 4, 2002

Germany is trying to accelerate production of the new Multi-Role Armored Vehicle, a boxy 8x8 wheeled armored carrier intended for a number of support, auxiliary, and combat roles. The British, partners in the MRAV program, are scaling back their plans for MRAV and will buy another vehicle for most of these missions. The problem is that MRAV is huge, weighing 25 tons empty (it can carry eight tons) and won't fit into a C-130, making an Army equipped with MRAVs harder to deploy in a fast-developing crisis situation.--Stephen V Cole
