Strategic Weapons: July 24, 1999

NUCLEAR SECURITY. Energy Secretary Bill Richardson has threatened to retaliate against Republican Congressmen if they pursue plans to reform security at nuclear labs and other facilities. Congressman Floyd Spence had been warned that the Savannah River site (in his South Carolina district) could be closed or denied key new contracts if he pushes for tighter security. Texas Congressman Mac Thornberry has received the same warnings; his district includes the Pantex Nuclear Weapons Assembly Plant, which has been engaged in disassembling nuclear weapons since the end of the Cold War.
