Private Beetle Bailey enlisted in the Army 50 years ago this summer, and has served his entire career at Camp Swampy. The comic strip has proved to be a potent, and free,  public relations tool for the army, portraying army life in a non-threatening way and taking the edge off perceptions of military service. --Stephen V Cole
