The hull of the first of three Type-209 diesel submarines (being built in Germany for South Africa) is complete and work has started on the second hull. The subs are to be delivered in September 2005, 2006, and 2007. The hull of the first of four Meko-200 patrol corvettes (also built in Germany for South Africa) is complete, and will be launched next summer and taken to Simon's Town in February 2003. Weapons and some other equipment will be fitted there. It should enter service in October 2004.--Stephen V Cole
