An attempt to assassinate the provincial intelligence chief in southwestern Helmand province has led to the arrest of over 300 suspects. Helmand has long been a supporter of the kind of Islamic fundamentalism favored by the Taliban. The assassination attempt has provided anti-Taliban forces go after known Taliban supporters.
