Turkey promised to send a 90-man special forces unit to Afghanistan to help train and support Afghan rebels who oppose the Taliban. A Turkish government spokesman said the unit would not participate directly in combat operations. Turk special forces have extensive experience in mountain operations (having fought the Kurds for years). The unit is part of Turkeys NATO commitment, since NATOs mutual defense article was invoked after September 11th.
