As expected, fewer voters turned out for national parliamentary elections. The year 2000 elections saw 67 percent of voters vote. But this time, only about 40 percent showed up. This was because the Islamic conservatives who, by law, have veto power over government decisions, prohibited most reformist candidates from running for office.
