During a training jump on 21 September, five Marines jumped from a C-17 onto Camp Lejeune and three of the parachutes failed to function. (Reserve chutes saved the three men from all but minor injuries.) An examination of their parachutes found that several of the lines had been cut, and a further investigation found cut lines on nine parachutes still waiting for use. While a criminal investigation proceeds, the Marines will say only that this is clearly a matter of deliberate sabotage.--Stephen V Cole
