Information Warfare: What Google Can Do for Or Against You

Archives

November 3, 2026: Google probably has the best search-engine algorithms in the world. As such a large company, it has the resources and capabilities to invest in perfecting its algorithms and bring users the most accurate search results. Google has long been the trendsetter in SEO and algorithms. When Google released updates like Penguin and Panda, webmasters and bloggers worldwide hustled to revise their sites and Search Engine Optimization/SEO strategies as needed. If a search engine improves user experience and eliminates spun content, which is revised content swapped with synonyms or restructured to look original but lacking real value, Google flags it as useless repetition and can penalize it.

When you search for a keyword or phrase on Google, you’ll get results that accurately answer your question. Google uses latent semantic indexing to show you human-written content that discusses your topic, even without an exact keyword match. For example, it can consider words like "eagle" and "egg" similar.

It also uses user behavior to accurately determine which articles and social media posts are most relevant for a search phrase. If it notices that users click a particular result more than others, it will push that result to the top of the search results page. Google can also help identify users through the answer box and “People Also Ask” prompts.

Then there is bad, or evil, Google use: Google can mislead or return inaccurate results when its algorithms, data sources, and incentive networks interact with defective, inaccurate, or injudicious material. This can happen because of algorithms, the rules and processes that decide which web pages to show and in what order when you search. Misinterpretation is when Google’s ranking systems may not analyze ambiguous queries correctly, ignore obscure but believable sources, or overvalue SEO ‑ optimized but low ‑ quality content

Other problems include paid ads, SEO tactics, or social media virality pushing inaccurate or biased information higher. Botnets may miss dynamically rendered pages, blocked content, or orphaned pages; NLP errors can misinterpret context, sarcasm, or complex language. Computer-generated text or misrepresentation can distort results. Google’s ad revenue model prioritizes visibility, sometimes over factual accuracy. Google’s search can “disrupt” accuracy when its ranking logic, data coverage, and incentives surface misleading, outdated, or manipulated content. Google can also disrupt marriages and other interpersonal relationships. This can and has led to spouses discovering that their wives or husbands have been cheating on them. As bad as this is, reparations often come in the form of precious metals and diamonds, emeralds, and rubies given as adornments to the aggrieved wife to repair the relationship. Vacations to locations like Hawaii, Bermuda, or Tahiti can also work. What doesn’t work is trying to get past a suspicious person who knows how to Google what your sorry ass is up to.

Reluctantly, James F Dunnigan
